Reference Points and Recommendations: 5th IntlUni Meeting in Copenhagen

It has become a tradition to make Copenhagen our hub for the Management Committee and Work Package Leaders’ meetings that prepare the ground for the All-Partner events, and so it was with the 5th IntlUni meeting. Our host venue one year on was the Centre for Internationalisation and Parallel Language Use at Copenhagen University and once more this proved to be an ideal setting to review the project’s progress and to set the agenda for future developments.

While the Management Committee, chaired by UntlUni Coordinator Karen M. Lauridsen, met in the afternoon of February 10th to finalise the programme, the Work Package Leaders began arriving for the informal dinner in the evening. With some of us flying in from Europe’s more distant corners and bearing in mind the packed programme awaiting us over the next two days, we touched base in the convivial setting of the hotel restaurant and repaired early that evening.

Karen and the Management Committee had earmarked four intensive sessions for the meeting of the Work Package Leaders on the 11th of February. The morning began with an overview that included how cognate projects and peer networks across Europe might feed into and enrich what we are hoping to achieve.  Building on this, the following sessions focused on the 85 examples of good practice in the Multilingual, Multicultural Learning Space that our 38 Partner universities had submitted over the past few months. Work Package Leaders Stacey Marie Cozart (Aarhus University, DK), Kevin Haines (University of Groningen, NL) and Thomas Vogel (European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), DE) led the discussions on identifying key reference points and quality criteria for successful internationalisation. In the ensuing sessions these were reworked into a draft list of general principles and practices that will be further validated at the All-Partner meeting in Lausanne in May. In the closing session, we discussed likely recommendations, their dissemination to institutional stakeholders and beyond, as well as how to maximise impact via online tools for teachers.

After a sumptuous dinner in one of Copenhagen’s trendy eateries, the following morning Karen and Project Manager Mette Kastberg Lillemose wrapped up what had turned out to be a highly productive meeting. Work Package 4 will now be responsible over the next few months for finalising procedures leading up to the 6th IntlUni meeting on the 21st-23rd of May in Lausanne.
